Women In Engineering/Now Recruiting Graduate Engineers

February 1, 2022

Today is the feast of St Brigid, one of Ireland’s three patron saints. Her origins are rooted in the pagan festival of Imbolc and the evening of the February 1st is notable as being the first of spring.

As women are being celebrated across the globe today, when better to mark the work of women here at home, in Balcas…meet Meave, Aine & Aoife

Meave McCartney has just celebrated her 12th anniversary with Balcas and is our Customer Engineering Manager, heading up a team of 3 Engineers who are dedicated to looking after our energy customer needs. Meave is a mum of one and has recently undertaken an MBA through Balcas.  The very definition of multi tasking.

Aine Butler joined us in 2019 as a graduate engineer to Meave’s department, which now boasts an industry-unusual 2-1 gender split.  She is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering.

Aine was invited to speak at the Young Ireland programme at the beginning of her career and was introduced as follows:

“Aine explained her decision to choose a career in engineering and her disappointment that few other women seem to be making a similar decision.  This, she believed, was due to the fact that engineering is not promoted to girls in schools – they don’t know about the wealth of career opportunities it can provide.  It is not the heavy-lifting, dirty job it is believed to be, said Aine.  People don’t realise your grandad’s new knee or the best straighteners were designed by engineers”.

Aoife McAloon works with the CHP team as a Process Engineer. Aoife has previously worked for other large scale manufacturing companies in a process engineering and continuous improvement capacity.  Key aspects of Process Engineering in our operations involves identification and implementation of opportunities to improve productivity, efficiency, process control measures and safety. We look forward to Aoife returning from Maternity Leave soon.

As it is also the day for fresh new opportunities, we are now recruiting for 2 Graduate Engineers so if you’re interested in reading more about working in Balcas please visit www.balcas.com/careers
